back story.
Nicholas A. Crank (born January 31, 1987) grew up immersed in art culture in Redding, California, with his Mother, Father and older brother. His Father being lifelong artist, from an early age, Nick was surrounded by vibrant colors, intricate designs, and the creative energy of his father's sign shop. This environment sparked his lifelong passion for art, which evolved during middle school as he became fascinated by M.C. Escher’s work and the Southern California hot rod culture, particularly the creations of Ed ‘Big Daddy’ Roth.
In high school, Nick shifted his focus to music and action sports but continued exploring various artistic styles, particularly graffiti, typography, and abstract art. By his early 20s, he had developed his own distinct style as a "Grunge-Creature Illustrator."
Nick enlisted in the Army in 2010, serving as a CH-47 Helicopter mechanic. During his six years of service, which included a tour in Afghanistan, he credits much of his personal and artistic growth to the time spent away from home. While stationed in Texas, he participated in local art shows, including Pancakes & Booze and RAW events in Austin. He completed his military service in 2016.
After transitioning back to civilian life, Nick began pursuing formal art education, studying Studio Arts and Graphic Design at Shasta College.
Fastforward to 2024, Nick is living in Portland, being a working stiff. Trying to keep the creative juices flowing.
